The Toyota A-BAT concept debuted at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, returning Toyota to its compact pickup truck roots. The environmentally advanced A-BAT provides modern versatility, roominess, and style in a compact pickup.

For earth-friendly considerations, the A-BAT concept is powered by Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology to deliver excellent fuel economy. The bed of the truck is perfect for work and play thanks to features like a first aid kit and flashlight integrated into the tailgate, sliding tie downs, an AC power unit, and tailgate lighting for illuminating the load in the bed.

The look of the A-BAT is unique. According to the Creative Designer Matt Sperling, they took the “trapezoid” silhouette from the side profile of the Prius and “transition[ed] it into an entirely new truck image.” The A-BAT’s 19″ wheels sit at the truck’s corners, creating a tough and ready stance.

While the exterior is rugged, the interior focused on a modern theme. Inside the A-BAT there is a retractable portable navigation unit with a 7″ diagonal screen and Wi-Fi internet. The solar panels on the dash recapture energy from the sun to assist in the charging of the nav-unit, portable power pack, and backlit information displays. The portable battery pack that offers both AC and DC for a wide variety of applications including power tools, laptops, or small appliances is housed before the two front seats in the alloy center console.
